Understanding Comparative Suffering

Comparative suffering involves the act of measuring our pain against the pain of others. For instance, someone might think, ‘I shouldn’t feel so upset about my job loss when others are dealing with much worse,’ or conversely, ‘My pain is more severe than theirs, so they shouldn’t complain.’ This comparison can create a hierarchy of suffering that invalidates our own and others’ experiences, leading to harmful consequences.

Comparative suffering can manifest in two ways:

Minimising Our Pain: When we deem our suffering as less significant compared to others, we may suppress our emotions, feeling that we have no right to be upset. This can lead to unprocessed grief, anxiety and depression, as our feelings are not given the space they need for healing.

Amplifying Our Pain: Conversely, by viewing our pain as greater than that of others, we might seek validation or sympathy in unhealthy ways, potentially fostering resentment and isolation. This perspective can also make us dismissive of others’ struggles, leading to strained relationships and a lack of empathy.

Engaging in these behaviours can severely impact our mental health. Minimising our own pain prevents us from addressing and processing our emotions, leading to a buildup of unresolved issues. On the other hand, amplifying our suffering can foster a victim mentality, where we focus on our pain to the exclusion of finding solutions or seeking help. Both extremes disrupt our emotional balance and hinder our overall well-being.

Overcoming Comparative Suffering

Acknowledge Your Pain: The first step is to acknowledge your pain without judgement. Recognise that your feelings are valid, regardless of how they compare to others’ experiences. Allow yourself to feel and express your emotions freely.

Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself with the same compassion you would offer a friend in distress. Understand that it’s okay to experience pain and that your suffering is real and deserving of attention and care.

Cultivate Empathy for Others: Empathy involves understanding and sharing the feelings of others. By practising empathy, we can appreciate that everyone’s pain is unique and significant in its own right. This helps us build stronger connections and support systems, fostering mutual understanding and respect.

Avoid Judgment and Comparison: Refrain from making judgments about your suffering or that of others. Instead of comparing pain, focus on offering support and understanding. Remember that everyone’s experiences are different, and there is no universal measure for suffering.
